Why You Should Hire a Local Roofing Contractor

It is inevitable that at some point you will need to invest in roof repairs or possibly even a roof replacement for your home. When looking for help, consider hiring a local roofing contractor for the following reasons:

  • Support your community: Local roofing contractors are not just business owners, they are part of your community. They experience the same weather, visit the same stores, and there is a good chance your kids go to the same school. By working with them, you are not only supporting your community but getting someone who understands the type of conditions your roof has to endure. Since they most likely own a home in your area, they very well have run into the same problems themselves.
  • They are responsive and accessible: When you work with a local roofing contractor, you will be working with individuals who are familiar with your region. This means they understand local weather patterns and can plan projects accordingly. It is also beneficial because you can visit their office and meet with them face-to-face!
  • You can verify their reputation: It is very likely that you are not the first person in your area to work with the local roofing contractor. Because of this, you can easily verify their reputation by speaking with members of your community who have worked with them in the past. Also, you can possibly see their past work for yourself, in person.

For everything from metal roofs to emergency roof repair, Sitton Roofing Co is proud to be your local roofing contractor serving Abilene, Brownwood, San Angelo, TX and beyond. When you need a reliable roofing company, do not hesitate to reach out!

FAQ

How long does a residential roof last?

The lifespan of your roof depends on the material, how well it was installed, and how it stands up to the weather over time. At Sitton Roofing, we work with quality materials and trusted techniques to help your roof last as long as possible. Here’s what you can generally expect:

  • Asphalt shingles typically last 15 to 30 years. Three-tab shingles are on the lower end, while architectural shingles can hold up closer to 30 years with good care.
  • Wood shingles or shakes offer a lifespan of 20 to 30 years, and sometimes longer with consistent maintenance.
  • Metal roofing can last 40 to 70 years, depending on the gauge and quality of the metal. Premium options like copper or zinc may last even longer.
  • Clay or concrete tiles have a typical lifespan of between 50 and 100 years.
  • Slate is one of the most durable options, lasting anywhere from 60 to over 200 years.

The pitch of your roof, the quality of attic ventilation, and your exposure to harsh weather can all affect how long your roof actually lasts. If you’re unsure how much time your current roof has left, we’re happy to inspect it and offer our honest opinion.

Metal roofing gauge refers to the thickness of the panels. The lower the number, the thicker and more durable the metal.

For most residential homes, 26-gauge metal is the go-to choice. It provides excellent durability, stands up to tough weather, and strikes a good balance between cost and protection.

If your home is in an area that sees frequent hail or strong storms, 24-gauge metal may be a better option. It is thicker, stronger, and built to take more of a beating, though it costs a bit more.

29-gauge metal is a thinner, more budget-friendly option often used for outbuildings, but it is not recommended for homes in areas with harsh conditions like Central Texas.

We typically recommend 26-gauge for most homes unless you’re in a high-impact weather zone, in which case we’ll guide you through the benefits of stepping up to 24-gauge.

There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question. The right roofing material depends on what matters most to you: cost, durability, appearance, or how it performs in the Texas heat.

  • Architectural asphalt shingles are a great all-around choice. They last between 30 and 50 years, are budget-friendly, and come in a wide variety of colors and styles.
  • Metal roofing, particularly 26-gauge, lasts 40 to 70 years or more. It is durable, energy-efficient, and requires very little maintenance.
  • Clay or concrete tiles are extremely long-lasting, with lifespans between 50 and 100 years. They handle heat well and are fire-resistant, but they are heavy and more expensive to install.
  • Slate roofing is elegant and virtually unmatched in durability, lasting 60 to 200 years. It is also one of the most expensive and heaviest options.
  • Wood shingles and shakes offer a natural, rustic look and typically last 20 to 30 years. However, they require more upkeep and are more vulnerable to fire and pests.

For most Texas homeowners, we often recommend metal roofing as the best overall investment due to its longevity and performance. That said, architectural asphalt shingles remain one of the most popular options for good reason, they provide great value, style, and durability.

If you’d like help deciding which material is best for your home, we’re here to walk you through the pros and cons based on your goals and budget.
